There are several references to the original games within the movie. The Roscoe Train station from the first level of the game is recreated for a scene in the movie. A health box containing painkillers, disguised as a fire hose box, appears at one point. Max also enters bullet time multiple times during the movie, and is shown to not be affected by being shot, or near death experiences, such as in the game.
