The £120,000 worth of fish was up to seven years out of date and crawling with maggots. The foul batch is being destroyed but a search has been launched to find out who the firm has supplied. The Lincolnshire company’s rubbish-strewn warehouse contained scallops, tiger prawns and parrot fish, partly-eaten by rats.

Joanna Riddell, of West Lindsey district council, said: “The fish, crawling in maggots and rats, had been defrosted and refrozen. It was a major health risk.” The food destruction order against Allan Rich Seafoods’ depot in Brookenby is the biggest of its kind ever imposed in England. Ganguly's letter on Singur

Former Indian cricket skipper Sourav Ganguly, on Thursday urged Tata group chief Ratan Tata not to shift the Nano factory out of West Bengal and instead ensure that the small car was produced at Singur.
"Sourav has written to Ratan Tata, urging him to see to it that the Nano rolled out of Singur," Ashok Bhattacharya, state minister for municipalities and urban affairs, said in Kolkata.
"Sourav told me he has written to Tata that the majority of people in Singur and the rest of the state were in favour of Tata Motors' Singur project. He has also mentioned the massive employment opportunities that the project will provide to the people of Singur and elsewhere," said Bhattacharya, known for his closeness to the cricketing icon.
Ganguly's missive to Tata comes a day before the industrialist is to meet Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee at the state secretariat here in a last-ditch attempt to produce the car at the Singur factory, where the company suspended work exactly a month back - September 2 - fearing the safety of its workers.
Ironically, it was on the same day - Sep 2 - that Ganguly had come out in support of the project calling upon people to stand up for the venture, saying it would "revolutionise the industrial prospects of West Bengal".
"The starting of the Nano project will be the beginning of an era in West Bengal which will completely revolutionise the prospect of the state and the future of the youth," Ganguly, a Tata Steel employee, said in that statement.
Originally scheduled to roll out the world's most inexpensive car this month, the project faces uncertainty with the company signalling it was considering a pull-out and talking to other state governments for an alternate location following intense protests by the state's main opposition Trinamool Congress.
The protesters have demanded return of 400 acres to farmers who had to part with their land for the project against their will.
An agreement between the state government and the protesters in the presence of Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi as also a compensation package announced by the chief minister have failed to resolve the deadlock.

Tata Motors to pull out

Ratan Tata has finally decided to pull out their Nano car plant from Singur, the controversial site in West Bengal. The meeting between Tata and West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee came at the end of more than a month of agitation led by the Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee.
Banerjee wanted 300 acres carved out from the land leased to the Tatas and returned to farmers, who did not willingly give their land.
A long struggle :
The protest against the Nano plant started between May and December 2006, when locals heckled Tata officials to protest land acquisition. Police had to teargas them, following which Mamata went on a hunger strike for 26 days.
Then, from August 24, 2008, Mamata began her gherao of the Tata factory. Four days on, her supporters threatened Tata employees and on September 2, Tata Motors declared the suspension of work at Singur.
On September 7, West Bengal Governor Gopal Krishna Gandhi oversaw an agreement between the Trinamool and the government but could not get them to agree on what the term maximum in the pact meant. Mamata claimed 300 acres while the government offered 70.
Hopes for a resolution rose on September 12 when Buddhadeb offered a revised economic package for Singur's farmers. Mamata rejected the package out of hand.
Since then, there has been no work at the factory though the deadline to produce the Nano in the October to December quarter is looming large enough for Ratan Tata that made him take the final call.

Junior Bhagyaraj’s debut film Sakkarakatti seems to be an extra-sugary and pretentious venture directed by debutant Kalaprabhu. And of course, the positive aspect seems to be Rahman’s chartbuster music.

Senate passes bailout

SENATE PASSES BAILOUT:

NEW YORK - The Senate on Wednesday night passed a sweeping and controversial financial bailout similar in key ways to one rejected by the House just two days earlier.
The measure was passed by a vote of 74 to 25 after more than three hours of floor debate in the Senate. Both presidential candidates, Sens. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, and John McCain, R-Arizona, voted in favor.
Like the bill the House rejected, the core of the Senate bill is the Bush administration's plan to buy up to $700 billion of troubled assets from financial institutions.
Those assets, mostly mortgage-related, have caused a crisis of confidence in the credit markets. A major aim of the plan is to free up banks to start lending again once their balance sheets are cleared of toxic holdings.
But the Senate legislation also includes a number of new provisions aimed at Main Street.
The changes are intended to attract more votes in the House, in particular from House Republicans, two-thirds of whom voted against the bailout plan.
The House is expected to take up the Senate measure for a vote on Friday, according to aides to Democratic leaders.
The legislation, if passed by the House, would usher in one of the most far-reaching interventions in the economy since the Great Depression.
Advocates say the plan is crucial to government efforts to attack a credit crisis that threatens the economy and would free up banks to lend more. Opponents say it rewards bad decisions by Wall Street, puts taxpayers at risk and fails to address the real economic problems facing Americans.
"If we do not act responsibly today, we risk a crisis in which senior citizens across America will lose their retirement savings, small businesses won't make payroll .. and families won't be able to obtain mortgages for their homes or cars," said Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., moments before the vote.
Because of Senate add-ons, the bill's initial price tag will be higher than the $700 billion that the Treasury would use to buy troubled assets. But over time, supporters say, taxpayers are likely to make back much if not all of the money the Treasury uses because it will be investing in assets with underlying value.

GANGULY in indian Team

INDIA NAME GANGULY IN TEST SQUAD

India squad: Anil Kumble (captain), Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman, Sourav Ganguly, Mahendra Dhoni, Subramaniam Badrinath, Harbhajan Singh, Amit Mishra, Zaheer Khan, Munaf Patel, Ishant Sharma, RP Singh.

Former captain Sourav Ganguly has been included within India's batting ranks in a 15-man squad for the first two Tests against Australia from 9 October.
Ganguly, captain of the squad which beat Steve Waugh's Aussies in 2001, will challenge rookie Subramaniam Badrinath for the number six position.
Uncapped leg-spinner Amit Mishra joins Anil Kumble and Harbhajan Singh as one of three slow bowlers in the squad.

Batsmen Yuvraj Singh, Aakash Chopra and Mohammad Kaif have all been overlooked.
Four fast bowlers have been named - Zaheer Khan, Munaf Patel, Ishant Sharma and Rudra Pratap Singh.

The selection raises the prospect of India's "fab four" batsmen - the enormously experienced quartet of Ganguly, Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman - taking on a fledgling Australian bowling attack.
Australia's only fit specialist spin bowler is the 25-year-old off-spinner Jason Krejza, a virtual unknown.

But Ganguly's presence will be viewed as controversial in some quarters. The 36-year-old has 6,888 runs in 109 Tests but did not feature in the domestic Irani Trophy, the traditional trial for Test selection.

He also batted poorly during the recent Test series in Sri Lanka and was not involved in India's conditioning camp which began on Tuesday in Bangalore.
But the Board of Control for Cricket in India's new selection panel, headed by Kris Srikkanth, has backed him.

Badrinath and Mishra have both played a handful of one-day internationals but are yet to appear in a Test .
